v2.0.0 Demo Postmortem

Thank You, Thank You, THANK YOU!!!

To everyone who purchased, played, shared, rated, tweeted, commented, THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!

It's been a long two years and I apologize for the long wait between updates. Hopefully, that will change with the next updates.

The purpose of this post is to discuss some of my ideas for how I can move forward with this project while also addressing some of the choices that contributed to the massive delay.

Selectable Player Character

The single biggest criticism I received for the initial demo was the ghost-like player character. I can understand why it was alienating. I chose to address this by giving you the option to select 1 of 3 player characters with varied skin tones. While this was a wonderful learning experience, it was also a huge hassle. Not only did it mean I needed to basically triple the number of rendered images, it also meant a much more difficult QA process and WAY more complex code.

Basically, I'm not sure it was worth the trouble.  There's a chance I will have to remove the choices and simply force the player to use a single HUMAN LOOKING player character. Rest assured, I won't go back to the ghost-like character; but I may not be able to offer players a choice of 3 skin tones.

At the same time, I would rather not remove the choice. I think it's a cool feature!

CG Gallery on Hold

The gallery is going to have to wait, sadly. At this point I can't even promise that it will ever be complete. I requires a lot of work because of the way I've coded things. It would be a simpler with only 1 player character but even then it's still a lot of work. Right now, it's a lower priority than anything else.

File Size Considerations

The game is already quite big. I'm a bit worried about how huge it could be with 5 matches. I might release a version in 1080p alongside the 1440p version. I have to look into this, and if it's not too much work this might be the best way to reduce file size.

Either way, I discovered I have not been compressing images as much as I could have been. In future I'll compress them more. This should trim 25%-50% off the final file size.

Personal Stuff, Priorities, Future Plans

I'm in the middle of some pretty big life challenges right now--including, but not limited to, recovering from a fractured ankle. Some of these things might force to take some breaks from developing this project.

Moreover, I don't want to work on this project forever. I'd like to be able to release a full version and move on to other projects. I might even start working on some short-story type projects while this is in development.

I don't want to hold up development too much, but it's important that I put out something I can sell sooner rather than later. My income has taken a hit recently and it would help if I could generate some money off my games. Sadly, this project could take a long time (especially if I use the selectable player character), so I might need to release smaller, more linear projects in between.

Feedback, Share on Socials

It's important that I determine how to proceed and I'd like to gather feedback. If you haven't already, please fill out the quick survey below. Additionally, feel free to rate or share this project on social media!

Thank you!
